Privacy Policy

Firebug Media Consulting (“Firebug Media”, “we”, “us”) respects your privacy and processes personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (“POPIA”). This notice explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it.

Who we are

Firebug Media Consulting is a digital agency based in Johannesburg, South Africa. We are the responsible party for the personal information described in this notice.

  • Information Officer: Earl Coetzee
  • Email: hello@firebugmedia.org
  • Website: firebugmedia.org
  • Physical address: Il Palazzone, Muriel Road, Roodepoort

Firebug Media is a small agency and is not currently registered with the Information Regulator (South Africa). We will update this notice if that changes.

What we collect

We only collect what we need to respond to you and to run this website.

  • Information you give us: your name, company name and the description of what you need, submitted through our contact form.
  • Information collected automatically: your IP address, browser type, device type, referring page, and the pages you visit on this site, collected through analytics cookies.
  • Information you send by email: anything you choose to include when you write to us directly.

We do not collect special personal information (as defined in POPIA), and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

Why we process it

  • To respond to your enquiry and take steps towards a contract with you.
  • To operate, secure and improve this website.
  • To meet our legal and accounting obligations.

We rely on your consent (for analytics cookies), the performance of a contract or steps towards one (for enquiries), and our legitimate business interests (for site security and improvement). You may withdraw consent for analytics at any time by adjusting your browser cookie settings.

Cookies and analytics

This site uses cookies and similar technologies. Some are necessary for the site to function. Others, including analytics cookies, help us understand how the site is used. Analytics data is aggregated and is not used to identify you personally. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site will still work.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with operators who help us run the business — for example our hosting provider, our email provider, and our analytics provider — and only to the extent they need it. Where an operator processes information outside South Africa, we require a level of protection that is comparable to POPIA, as section 72 of POPIA requires.

How long we keep it

Enquiries are kept for as long as needed to deal with your request and for a reasonable period afterwards for our records. Analytics data is retained according to our analytics provider’s retention settings. We delete or de-identify information when it is no longer needed.

Your rights

Under POPIA you have the right to:

  • Be told whether we hold personal information about you, and to receive a copy of it.
  • Ask us to correct or delete information that is inaccurate, irrelevant, excessive, out of date, incomplete, misleading or unlawfully obtained.
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interests.
  • Withdraw consent you have given.
  • Complain to the Information Regulator.

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@firebugmedia.org with “POPIA request” in the subject line. We will respond within a reasonable time and in any event within the periods set out in POPIA. We may ask you to verify your identity before we act.

How we protect it

We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal information, including encryption in transit (HTTPS), access controls on our systems, and keeping the number of people who can access information to a minimum. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Complaints

If you believe we have failed to protect your personal information, please contact us first so we can try to resolve it. You also have the right to complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa):

  • General enquiries: inforeg@justice.gov.za
  • Telephone: 010 023 5207
